Update your stock prices with ONE click!

Keeping an Excel spreadsheet to track your Portfolio?

Some people update their spreadsheet one stock at a time, others update one transaction at a time. Regardless which method you use, it is always a hassle to update the stock prices manually.

There are many ways to search for live quotes and automatically update your spreadsheet with these real-time stock prices. Today, i will show you one method i used, before i started using SGXcafe.

While SGXcafe is easy, portable and amazing, it is good to have your own personal spreadsheet to keep track of your transactions, in case you want to play around with the data you have. In addition, SGXcafe only provides daily reports on your gain/loss and portfolio value.

Update Stockprices Automatically with VBA using Yahoo Finance Data
Ok here's how it works.

Open Excel and enable the developer tab by going to options, add-ins and checking VBA ToolPak.
After that, you should see a new 'Developer tab'. Click on Visual Basic,
At the top left you should see your spreadsheet. Right Click on it and create a 'module'. Paste the following code in the blank space at the right.

---
Function StockQuote(strTicker As String)

Dim strURL As String, strCSV As String
Dim dbClose As Double

' Compile the request URL
strURL = "http://download.finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=" & strTicker & "&f=l1"

Set http = CreateObject("MSXML2.XMLHTTP")
http.Open "GET", strURL, False
http.Send
strCSV = http.responseText

dbClose = Val(strCSV)
StockQuote = dbClose

Set http = Nothing

End Function
---

You have just created a formula with the name 'stockquote'.
Simply type =StockQuote('input the relevant stockquote here')

For example, Singtel as a stockquote of Z74.SI in Yahoo Finance. Hence, type this:
=StockQuote(Z74.SI)

You can reference a cell instead, like this:

A few things to note
The stock prices are not automatically updated in real time. You would need to highlight the cells, press 'F2' and hit 'Ctrl+Enter'. This is because the formula does not recalculate every second, or Excel will crash. Somewhat like a Pivot table.

Happy investing!

Watchlist Trigger/ Dividends Update

Short update on SGXcafe.

Been using for almost a week and Evan is a really nice person. He's the one making all this possible.

SGXcafe has a 'Feedback' tool which users can send in any complaints or suggestions.
Even though he is just a one-man-show, he resolved my queries in less than a week! One of my problems was Genting P9GZ coupons was not reflected under 'dividends'.

It is resolved now.

I hope anyone of you reading can spread the message about SGXcafe.
Its totally free, and just try it out. There's great data analytics tools, both predictive and historical trends.

You can even share your portfolio.
You have the option to set the sharing preferences to allow only % to be shown so no one knows your portfolio value (so they dont know how rich you are).

Another thing I recently find useful is the 'Watchlist' Trigger Function.

Haven't tried how this works, i think it will be triggered only at 6pm each day so its not a real-time tool. Will update about this.

An easy way to track your Portfolio

I have stumbled onto this gem - SGXcafe, which helps you track, review and analyse your transactions and portfolio.

All you have to do is to Input all your transactions ("buy" and "sell") into the webpage. Dividends will be automatically updated.

*Note: You can input the transactions one by one, but i recommend using the CSV function that is available in the webpage. Simply export your data into a new Excel worksheet, sort the data according to the SGXcafe's guidelines and "save as" a CSV file.

The Output (Some Best Features)
  1. Portfolio Value (at previous day close; updated at 6pm)
  2. Profit/loss figures (based on Portfolio Value - Cost)
  3. Day change in Portfolio Value
  4. Individual stock average purchase price
  5. Upcoming/ Collected Dividends information
Extra Features
  1. Dividend Strength (metric developed to quantify dividend stability)
  2. Sharing of Portfolio
  3. Watchlist, news
You can take a look at my Current Portfolio.

Previously, I have tracked my portfolio using Excel and VBA to get live stock quotes from Yahoo Finance. However, this is a tedious and awkward way to track and share your own portfolio.

My Portfolio

Here's my Portfolio - as of May 2016
I recall learning that Pies are best left for eating, and so my portfolio is illustrated in Bars. You can form your own opinion after reading this article from Business Insider.

Here's the detailed version. Note that this is based on historical data, while the Bar Chart above is based on 'Marked to Market' (MTM).
Realised stocks are 'sunk' and are not reflected here.

My Asset Allocation
I am currently heavily invested in Corporate Bonds & Reits. This may not be a good indication.

I aim to gear my portfolio towards 30% Bonds, 30% Etf, 30% Reits, 10% stocks.
The first 2 will be held passively, while an active strategy will be adopted for the stocks.
For Reits, a long-term approach will be taken but periodic (maybe annual) reviews are essential.
